It's Easy With Vauxhall Motability!
You choose the car; we do the rest. Motability means independence.
It means the freedom to come and go, to shops, to work, to get the kids to school. It means staying in touch, making a difference- and getting more out of life. Using your mobility allowance to pay for a new car is an important choice for the life you plan to lead. And Motability is your perfect motoring partner. For thousands of people with disabilities and their families, it’s the key to trouble-free motoring and the open road. We take care of the practicalities, including: a single, regular payment which includes insurance, maintenance and RAC roadside recovery routine servicing, and tyres at no extra cost a unique customer service help line so you can enjoy the freedom of the road.
Who can apply?
To use any of the Motability schemes you must be receiving one of the following benefits: Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance or War Pensioners Mobility Supplement. You should expect to receive the allowance for the full length of the agreement you choose. But don’t worry; we welcome applications as long as you have at least 12 months award length remaining when you apply. An application for a car can also be made on behalf of a child aged three or older, who is entitled to the mobility allowance, and even if you don’t drive, but receive the allowance, you can apply for a car as a passenger and propose two other people as your drivers.
Your choice
Motability Contract Hire Scheme*
This low cost rental package is the most popular of Motability’s schemes because of its simplicity. You just exchange your Mobility allowance for the use of a brand new Vauxhall for three years, during which time it will be serviced, insured and fully maintained, including full RAC cover. There is also cover for tyres for wear and punctures, and windscreens.
You can apply if you have 12 months or more of your Disability Living Allowance 'award' remaining. If your award is not renewed during the full length of your chosen scheme, your car will need to be returned. You may need to pay for the fitting and removal of any adaptations.
At the end of the period, the car is returned to Motability Operations who operate the car schemes under contract to Motability.
Above is a small sample of some of the most popular models from the current price list.
Other schemes available
Motability New Car Purchase Scheme ‡
Vauxhall also offer discount on a wide range of models that can be purchased through Motability using your DLA or WPMS. You are responsible for insurance, maintenance, servicing and running cost throughout. And the vehicle becomes yours to keep at the end of the payment period. All new Vauxhalls are protected by a three year manufacturer’s warranty** and one year’s free AA-operated Vauxhall Assistance, of course, so you shouldn’t find yourself with any unexpected repair bills. If you are a Blue Badge holder, disabled driver or a driver with disabilities, receive either the Severe Disablement Allowance, Higher Rate Mobility Component/Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Lower Rate Mobility Component of the DLA, this is the plan for you. You can buy yourself a new Vauxhall at favourable discounts saving hundreds of £s on the list price of the vehicle.
Motability Used Car Hire Purchase Scheme ‡
Cars less than five years old, with under 60,000 miles from the date of contract can also be purchased from Vauxhall through Motability. A wide range of high-quality used Vauxhalls are available from our award-winning Network Q programme - all subject to the Network Q multi point check, and protected by a comprehensive 12-month unlimited mileage guarantee and 12-month AA-backed Network Q Assistance. Simply choose your vehicle and negotiate a purchase price with the Motability Consultant.
If money is a problem when financing the car or adaptations, Motability may be able to provide a grant through their own charitable fund or the Specialised Vehicle Funds, which they administer for the government.
Disabled people don't have to pay VAT on the cost of hiring a car through the Motability Scheme. The cost of any work involved in adapting a vehicle for a disabled person is also eligible for VAT relief. If you need more help – ask Aston.
The balance can be financed using your allowance to pay the repayments on a three year or five year hire purchase scheme. The amount available to you varies according to the interest rate at the time. For an exact quotation speak to our motability specialists who will be pleased to assist.
Adapting Your Vehicle
You can get your vehicle adapted so that driving is safe and comfortable and getting in and out of the car is easier. There are motoring accessories available for people with upper or lower body disabilities or both.
Motoring accessories for disabled people
These accessories include:
- Hand controls to operate the accelerator and brake
- Steering wheel knobs that help you turn the wheel more easily and give greater control
- Accessories to help you get in and out of your vehicle like wheel chair hoists, ramps and tail lifts
- Cushion, covers and supports
- Adapted mirrors
- Safety belts, seat belts and harnesses
- Rotating seats
- People lifts
- Wheelchair hoists
The research charity Ricability has published a number of reports that look in depth at the various types of adaptations available to help you drive if you have a disability, including car controls, people lifters and how to get a wheelchair into a car.
The guides also contain details of suppliers who carry out adaptations.

Adapting your vehicle for upper body disabilities
If you’ve lost the use of one arm or have a weekened arm, you may consider adaptions inclduing:
- A steering wheel knob fitted to the rim of the steering wheel.
- Automatic transmission
- Direction indicators and the horn within finger reach or as foot controls, which you can operate without letting go of the wheel
- Moving the handbrake to the right of the driver’s seat
- Joystick steering
If you have an artificial limb fitted below the elbow you can drive a car using a special concave limb attachment fitted over the steering wheel or the gear lever.
Even if you've lost the use of both arms, you can still drive with redesigned car controls. You could also try a foot steering system.
Adapting a vehicle for lower body disabilities
If you've lost the use of one of your legs or have reduced usage in one leg, the adaptations you may consider include:
- An automatic transmission car, which does not require the use of a clutch
- Moving the accelerator on an automatic car to the left side of the footbrake if you have a right leg disability
- A semi-automatic clutch, which allows you to use a manual gearbox without the clutch pedals
- If you’ve lost the use of both legs, you may consider options like:
- Hand controls, especially with an automatic transmission (these come in a variety of models)
- Steering assistance
If you get your car adapted or hire or buy an adapted car, it's important to get good advice and training on using the vehicle. This is especially true for adaptations like a left-foot accelerator.
Adapting your vehicle for easier access
There are accessories and adaptations that can make it easier to get in and out of your vehicle. This may be particularly important if you're in a wheelchair.
You may be able to get into your car from the driver's side, passenger side or rear (on a hatchback). Your choice of entry will determine the type of adaptations you need for your vehicle.
For entry from the driver's or passenger's door, you need wide doors and preferably a sliding and swivelling aid.
Vehicle conversion specialists produce wheelchair accessible vehicles.
Transferring from a wheelchair to your car
It can be difficult to transfer from a wheelchair into a car. You can use a board, lifting belts or leg lifters. There are also hoists, lifts (to lift you and your chair into the car) and specially converted cars or vans that you can drive your wheelchair into.
Driving and disabiltiy
Having a medical condition or disability does not necessarily mean you cannot or will not be allowed to drive. Whether you are a new or an experienced driver, you must let the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) know about any medical condition or disability that may affect your driving.
Medical conditions , disability and driving
You must tell the DVLA if you have, or have ever had, a medical condition or an impairment that may affect your driving.
If you hold a current driving licence and have a 'notifiable' medical condition or disability, you must tell the DVLA right away. You should not wait until your licence is due for renewal.
You must also tell the DVLA if your medical condition or disability has become worse since your licence was issued or if you develop a new medical condition or disability.
Sometimes the best option can be to surrender your license, and reapply for its restoration at a later date.
'Notifiable' medical conditions and disabilities include epilepsy, strokes and other neurological conditions, mental health problems, physical disabilities and visual impairments. There is information about how to tell the DVLA in the general motoring section of Directgov.
The research charity Ricability publishes booklets aimed at motorists with particular needs, including motoring after amputation, receiving a brain injury or having a stroke, and motoring with arthritis, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis or restricted growth.

The Blue Badge parking scheme
The Blue Badge scheme provides a range of parking concessions for people with severe mobility problems who have difficulty using public transport. The scheme operates throughout the UK.
The concessions provided under the scheme apply to on-street parking only.
Badge holders may park on single or double yellow lines for up to three hours in England and Wales, except where there is a ban on loading or unloading. There are also a few locations where local schemes apply, such as parts of central London. You must display both your Blue Badge and parking disc showing time of arrival.
There is no time limit for parking on yellow lines in Scotland.
Badge holders may park for free and for as long as they need to at on-street parking meters and pay-and-display machines, unless there is a traffic sign specifying a time limit for holders of Blue Badges.
Where a time limit is in force you must also display the special blue parking disc showing time of arrival.
While the scheme operates throughout the UK, there are small variations in its application in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland from England. Please see the relevant website for further information.
